Department playbook template: set up a department that runs without you

A department playbook writes down everything a department or ministry needs to run without its leader in the room: why it exists, who owns each role, how you know it's healthy, when the team meets, and how the work gets done. Pick the business, nonprofit or ministry version and we'll email you the PDF.

What's inside

Six sections for every department

  • Purpose. Why the department or ministry exists.
  • Roles. Who owns each seat, staff and volunteers alike.
  • Health. The few measures that tell you it's working.
  • Rhythm. When the team meets and what each meeting decides.
  • Processes. How the work gets done, written to our SOP standard.
  • Next fixes. What to improve first.

For ministries too

Every ministry, one body

“Let all things be done decently and in order” (1 Corinthians 14:40). The ChurchOS version speaks in ministries, campuses and serving teams, and starts each section with prayer.

FAQ

Common questions

How do I set up a department so it runs without me?

Write down six things: why it exists, who owns each role, how you measure health, when the team meets, how each process is done, and what to fix next. The playbook walks through each one.

Is there a version for ministries and nonprofits?

Yes. The playbook comes in three versions: BusinessOS for companies, NonprofitOS for nonprofits and ChurchOS for churches and ministries.

What's the difference between a department playbook and an SOP?

An SOP covers one process. A playbook covers a whole department, including its purpose, roles, measures and meetings, and holds its SOPs inside it.

Start with one stuck process.
